1. JDG: sole proprietorship, most-used status
JDG is used by over 2 million Polish entrepreneurs — the reference status for launching an independent activity.
JDG (Jednoosobowa Działalność Gospodarcza, sole proprietorship) is registered at CEIDG (Centralna Ewidencja i Informacja o Działalności Gospodarczej), a central registry held online by Ministerstwo Rozwoju. Registration is free and instant via biznes.gov.pl portal with electronic signature (Profil Zaufany). The founder immediately receives their NIP number (SIRET equivalent) and REGON number (statistical). No share capital required, no notarial act. JDG is the most-used form by freelancers, service providers, craftspeople, and individual traders.
Three main fiscal regimes are accessible to JDG. First, ogólny regime (general) with PIT (Podatek od dochodów osobistych) taxation per the progressive scale: 12% up to 120,000 PLN (~€28,000), 32% beyond. Second, podatek liniowy (linear tax) at 19% flat, without brackets, particularly advantageous beyond 120,000 PLN annual profit. Third, ryczałt (flat-rate taxation on turnover) with rates varying by activity from 2% to 17% of turnover.
ZUS contributions (Zakład Ubezpieczeń Społecznych) constitute a significant charge for JDGs. For a new founder, several reliefs are available. « Ulga na start » (start relief) totally exempts from social contributions during the first 6 months (only health contribution remains due, approximately 314 PLN/month in 2025). Then, « Mały ZUS Plus » (small ZUS plus) applies reduced contributions proportional to income for an additional 24 months for entrepreneurs under 120,000 PLN turnover. Beyond, standard contributions apply: ~1,600 PLN/month in 2025 (~€370).
Nowy Ład and its consequences
The « Nowy Ład » (New Order) fiscal reform that came into force in 2022 modified several parameters for independents. The health contribution (składka zdrowotna) is now calculated differently by chosen fiscal regime: 4.9% of income at podatek liniowy, 9% of income at general regime, fixed rate at ryczałt. This differentiation makes regime arbitrage more complex and requires personalized analysis — the BoostPro IA simulator includes this automated calculation.
