In Poland, self-employed pensions (przedsiebiorcy) are managed by ZUS (Zaklad Ubezpieczen Spolecznych). All entrepreneurs must contribute to ZUS. The system rests on three pillars: the mandatory scheme (ZUS), open pension funds (OFE) and individual savings (IKE/IKZE).

Poland offers several ZUS contribution reliefs for new business owners:
Full exemption from ZUS contributions for the first 6 months of activity. The entrepreneur only pays the health contribution (skladka zdrowotna).
For 24 months after ulga na start ends, the contribution base is reduced to 30% of the minimum wage, providing significant savings compared to standard ZUS.
For small businesses with annual revenue under PLN 120,000, contributions are calculated on actual income, further reducing the burden.
Poland offers two tax-advantaged individual retirement savings vehicles:
IKE (Indywidualne Konto Emerytalne): annual ceiling of about PLN 23,472 (2024). Withdrawals at legal retirement age are fully tax-free on gains.
IKZE (Indywidualne Konto Zabezpieczenia Emerytalnego): annual ceiling of about PLN 9,388. Contributions are tax-deductible, but withdrawals are taxed at a flat 10% rate.
IKE is better for long-term optimisation (full exemption). IKZE suits those wanting to reduce current tax liability.
Paying on the minimum base cuts costs but leads to a very low pension. Assess your capacity for supplementary savings before deciding.
