In Germany, the majority of self-employed workers (Selbständige) are NOT subject to mandatory pension insurance. This is a major feature of the German system that sets it apart from most European countries.
Some self-employed workers are however subject to mandatory pension insurance with the Deutsche Rentenversicherung (DRV): tradespeople registered in the Handwerksrolle, teachers, midwives, artists and publicists (via KSK), and self-employed with only one client.
Any self-employed person not subject to mandatory insurance can voluntarily join the DRV. Monthly contributions range from ~96.72 EUR (minimum) to ~1,357.80 EUR (maximum) in 2024. This grants access to the basic pension and rehabilitation benefits.
| Who is mandatorily insured? | Who can voluntarily insure? |
|---|---|
| Handwerker (Handwerksrolle) | Freiberufler (IT, Consulting, etc.) |
| Künstler & Publizisten (KSK) | Gewerbetreibende |
| Lehrkräfte, Hebammen | E-Commerce, Online-Dienstleistungen |
| Arbeitnehmerähnliche Selbständige (1 Auftraggeber) | Gastronomie, Einzelhandel |
The Rürup-Rente is the most popular retirement savings scheme among German self-employed workers. Created in 2005, it offers substantial tax advantages.
How it works: flexible contributions, lifetime annuity from age 62, non-transferable and non-capitalizable. Contributions are tax-deductible up to 27,566 EUR per year (2024).
Tax advantage: in 2024, 100% of contributions are deductible from income tax (gradually since 2005). The annuity is taxable in retirement under the deferred taxation principle (nachgelagerte Besteuerung).
Compared to voluntary DRV, the Rürup-Rente offers greater contribution flexibility and a higher tax deduction ceiling, but does not grant access to DRV rehabilitation benefits.
The Künstlersozialkasse is a special scheme for self-employed artists and publicists in Germany. It functions as a quasi-employer.
The insured person pays about 50% of the pension contribution calculated on their estimated income. The KSK funds the other half through contributions from client companies (Künstlersozialabgabe, 5% in 2024) and a federal subsidy.
Take advantage of the full tax deductibility of the Rürup-Rente (up to 27,566 EUR/year) to reduce your tax burden while building your retirement.
Even with minimum contributions (~96.72 EUR/month), voluntary DRV gives you access to rehabilitation benefits and a public pension base.
Don't rely on one pillar alone: combine Rürup-Rente, voluntary DRV, and potentially private life insurance (private Altersvorsorge) to secure your retirement.
If your pension is insufficient, the Grundsicherung im Alter (~924 EUR/month) provides a safety net. The means test is strict but guarantees a minimum income.
