This guide is based on official data from the Ministry of Labor and OPCOs to present the financial benefits of hiring an apprentice in 2026.
Why apprenticeship remains financially unbeatable
According to the Ministry of Labor, the number of apprenticeship contracts exceeded 830,000 annual signings, a historical record. Behind these figures lies an economic reality: for a small business, hiring an apprentice often costs less than not hiring at all, thanks to the combination of available subsidies.
The unique aid: 6,000 euros in the first year
Since 2025, apprenticeship aid is set at 6,000 euros for the first year of the contract, with no diploma level requirements (from CAP to master's degree). The aid is paid monthly by the ASP, or 500 euros per month.
The real cost of an apprentice
An apprentice's salary is calculated as a percentage of the minimum wage, depending on age and year of training:
| Age | 1st year | 2nd year | 3rd year |
|---|---|---|---|
| 18-20 years | 43% of minimum wage (~760 €) | 51% (~901 €) | 67% (~1,184 €) |
| 21-25 years | 53% of minimum wage (~936 €) | 61% (~1,078 €) | 78% (~1,378 €) |
| 26 years and over | 100% of minimum wage | 100% of minimum wage | 100% of minimum wage |
After deducting the monthly aid of 500 euros, a 19-year-old apprentice in their first year costs the employer approximately 260 euros per month. According to DARES data, this is the lowest wage cost of all subsidized employment schemes.
Contribution exemptions
Companies with fewer than 11 employees benefit from total exemption from employer contributions on the apprentice's salary. For companies with 11 or more employees, the general contribution reduction (Fillon) applies.
In practice, according to URSSAF, residual employer contributions on an apprenticeship contract are among the lowest of all types of employment contracts.
Training coverage by the OPCO
The cost of training at a vocational training center (CFA) is fully covered by the OPCO to which the company belongs, within the limits of funding levels set by France Compétences. In 2026, these levels vary from 5,000 to 12,000 euros per year depending on the diploma being pursued.
The company has no financial procedures to carry out for training: the CFA invoices the OPCO directly.
Simplified procedures
The process of hiring an apprentice has been considerably simplified:
- Find a candidate: 1jeune1solution.gouv.fr portal, vocational training centers, France Travail
- Sign the contract: CERFA form 10103 (available online)
- Register with the OPCO: contract submission within 5 business days
- Receive the aid: automatic payment by the ASP, without additional request
According to France Compétences, the average time between contract signing and the first aid payment is 2 to 3 months.
Benefits beyond the financial
According to a DARES study published in 2024, 67% of apprentices are hired by their host company at the end of their training. This conversion rate makes apprenticeship the most effective recruitment channel, far ahead of standard job postings (12-month retention rate of 45% according to France Travail).
The investment in training thus becomes an investment in recruitment, with a collaborator already trained in the company's internal processes.
Simulating the cost of an apprentice
To obtain a personalized estimate of the cost of an apprentice based on the profile sought and the size of the company, it is possible to use a dedicated simulator for hiring aid incorporating all parameters (age, training level, business sector, workforce size).
The amounts indicated are based on the minimum wage in effect on January 1, 2026 (1,766.92 € gross monthly). The conditions of aid schemes may change during the year.
