The main families of housing grants
There are generally four types of housing grants, present in various forms in most member states:
- Housing allowances: recurring means-tested support to reduce the cost of rent or monthly repayments.
- Energy-renovation grants: incentives and subsidised loans for insulation, efficient heating and renewable energy — often encouraged by the EU's climate goals.
- Home-ownership support: reduced-rate loans, public guarantees, first-time-buyer schemes.
- Rental guarantees: public guarantees that make it easier to rent without a private guarantor.
