1. Defining a marketplace: models, segments, and key metrics
Marketplaces organize in several sub-models with distinct economic dynamics.
A marketplace is a platform connecting sellers (supply) and buyers (demand) with a commission (take rate, typically 8 to 25% of transaction). Three main sub-models. B2C marketplace: Vinted (second-hand fashion), Backmarket (refurbished electronics), Etsy (crafts), Catawiki (collectibles auctions). B2B marketplace: Mirakl (B2B operator e-commerce), ManoMano (DIY pro), Spendesk (pro payments). Services marketplace: Doctolib (health), Malt (tech freelance), ManoMano (home DIY), Brigad (restauration and hospitality).
2024 marketplace metrics (Dealroom and a16z benchmarks) vary by sub-model. B2C products marketplace: 10-25% take rate, 5-15% net margin of GMV at maturity, seller churn < 5%/month, 50-150% YoY GMV growth in scale phase. Services marketplace: 12-25% take rate, 8-20% net margin at maturity, provider churn < 3%/month, 80-200% YoY services growth. B2B marketplace: more variable take rate 5-20% by vertical, lower transaction frequency but higher average basket.
Three structuring criteria distinguish marketplaces that scale versus those that plateau. First, network effects: each new seller attracts more buyers (and vice versa) — measurable by organic growth vs paid acquisition. Second, matured monetization: take rate that maintains or increases without seller churn (sign that value is demonstrated). Third, liquidity: supply/demand matching ratio (rate of concretized vs initiated transactions). A marketplace with liquidity < 30% (70% of intentions don't materialize) generally suffers from chicken-and-egg or UX friction.
GMV vs Revenue: frequent confusion
GMV (Gross Merchandise Value) is the total volume transacted on the marketplace; Revenue is the captured commission (GMV × take rate). Presenting GMV as « revenue » in a BP is a frequent mistake immediately detected. VC funds evaluate both: GMV for market size and trajectory, Revenue for unit economics and profitability. A marketplace at €10M GMV and 15% take rate generates €1.5M of effective revenue.
